Common questions
How secure is the password protection?
The PDF is locked with AES-256 encryption, the strongest kind PDFs support. Without the password, its pages can't be opened or read. A long password that's hard to guess keeps it safest.
Will the PDF open on any device?
Yes. Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac, Chrome, Edge, phones and other PDF readers all ask for the password and then open the file normally.
What if I forget the password?
It can't be recovered: Filekin doesn't keep your password, and the encryption has no back door. Keep it somewhere safe, or keep an unprotected copy of the original.
Can people print or copy from it once it's open?
Yes. Anyone who has the password can view, print and copy from the PDF as usual. The password controls who can open it.
Why is my PDF sent to Filekin's server?
Protecting a PDF means encrypting every part of it with AES-256. Browsers can't do that reliably, so Filekin does it on its server in a second or two. Your PDF and password are deleted as soon as your download has been sent. Tools that don't need this, like Organize pages and Rotate PDF, work entirely in your browser.
Is my password safe with Filekin?
Your PDF and password travel over an encrypted connection and are used only to protect the file. The password is never stored or logged, and the file is deleted as soon as your download has been sent.
How do I change or remove the password later?
Use Unlock PDF with the current password to get an unprotected copy. To change the password, protect that copy again here.
Is there a size limit?
PDFs up to 90 MB work, with no limit on the number of pages.
