Unlock a PDF

Remove the password from a PDF you can open, or lift restrictions on printing, copying and editing. You get a copy that opens freely everywhere.

How to unlock a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above, or click to choose it.
  2. Type the password that opens it. If it opens without one and you only can't print, copy or edit it, leave the box empty.
  3. Click Unlock PDF and download the copy, which opens without a password and has no restrictions.

Common questions

Can Filekin unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?

If the PDF asks for a password to open, you need that password: Filekin doesn't guess or crack passwords. If it opens freely but won't let you print, copy or edit, Filekin can remove those restrictions without a password.

What's the difference between a password and restrictions?

An open password stops anyone without it from seeing the PDF at all. Restrictions let everyone open it, but block printing, copying text or editing. Unlock PDF removes both and gives you a plain PDF.

Why is my PDF sent to Filekin's server?

Taking the protection off means rewriting every part of the PDF without its encryption. Browsers can't do that reliably, so Filekin does it on its server in a second or two. Your PDF is deleted as soon as your download has been sent. Tools that don't need this, like Organize pages and Rotate PDF, work entirely in your browser.

Is my password safe?

Your password and PDF travel over an encrypted connection and are used only to open the file. The password is never stored or logged, and the file is deleted as soon as your download has been sent.

Why does it say my password isn't right?

Passwords are case-sensitive, so check capital letters and the Caps Lock key. Filekin also tries the password without any spaces you may have copied at the start or end.

Does unlocking change my PDF?

Only the protection is removed. Pages, text, images, links and form fields stay exactly as they were. Your original file isn't changed: you download an unlocked copy.

Can I unlock any PDF?

Only unlock PDFs you own or have permission to change. Files locked with a digital certificate instead of a password can't be unlocked here.

Is there a size limit?

PDFs up to 90 MB work, with no limit on the number of pages.
