Validate an e-invoice: XRechnung, ZUGFeRD and Factur-X

Find out in seconds whether an e-invoice meets the official EN 16931, XRechnung and ZUGFeRD / Factur-X rules, the same ones German and French receivers use. Every problem is explained in plain English, with its official rule number.

How to validate an e-invoice

  1. Drop your e-invoice into the box above: an XRechnung or other XML invoice, or a ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDF.
  2. Filekin finds the format and profile and checks the invoice against the matching official rules.
  3. Read the report: whether it's valid, every error and warning in plain English with its rule number, and what to fix.
  4. Save the report as a text file to send to whoever made the invoice, or open the invoice in the E-Invoice Viewer.

Common questions

How do I check if an XRechnung is valid?

Drop the XML file into the box. Filekin checks it with the official rules from KoSIT, the German coordination office behind XRechnung, the same rules German authorities and validation services use, and tells you whether it passes.

Which rules does the validator use?

The XML schema and Schematron rules of EN 16931 (CEN), XRechnung (KoSIT) and Factur-X / ZUGFeRD (FNFE-MPE and FeRD). The report names the exact versions it checked against.

What does error BR-CO-10 mean?

The invoice total of line amounts doesn't equal the sum of the line net amounts. It's usually a rounding mistake in the software that made the invoice. Like every rule, it's explained in the report together with where in the invoice it was found.

What's the difference between an error and a warning?

An error breaks a rule the invoice must meet, so a receiver may reject it. A warning points to something that should be fixed but doesn't make the invoice invalid on its own.

Why is my ZUGFeRD MINIMUM or BASIC WL invoice not valid in Germany?

Those two profiles leave out the invoice lines, so they don't meet EN 16931. German law doesn't accept them as e-invoices; they count as other invoices. Use the EN 16931 (COMFORT), EXTENDED or XRECHNUNG profile instead.

Can it check Peppol and UBL invoices?

Yes. UBL and CII invoices are checked against the EN 16931 rules that Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 is built on. Peppol's own extra rules aren't part of this check.

Does it check the PDF/A part of a ZUGFeRD PDF?

It checks the basics receivers look at: PDF/A-3 identification, embedded fonts, the color profile and how the XML is attached. It isn't a full PDF/A certification.

Is my invoice stored?

No. It's sent securely to Filekin for the check and deleted right after. Nothing is kept or shared.
