When you sell to a business in another EU country you usually charge no German VAT. The invoice needs specific details instead.

Services: reverse charge

For a service to a business in another EU country, the customer usually owes the VAT in their own country. You send a net invoice with the note "Reverse charge: VAT is due from the recipient" (in German, "Steuerschuldnerschaft des Leistungsempfängers") and both VAT IDs: yours and the customer's.

Goods: intra-EU supply

Goods delivered to a business in another EU country are VAT-exempt for you. The invoice shows both VAT IDs and the note "Intra-community supply, exempt from VAT".

Before: check the VAT ID

Both depend on your customer having a valid VAT ID. Check it in the EU register (VIES) before invoicing; if it's invalid, you may have to charge German VAT after all.

After: report it

These sales go in your VAT return and in the EC Sales List (Zusammenfassende Meldung). Your bookkeeping or tax adviser usually handles that.

With Filekin

In the invoice generator, choose "reverse charge" or "intra-EU supply" under Tax. Filekin adds the right note, asks for both VAT IDs and can check your customer's number in the EU register.

This guide explains the rules in plain words; it isn't legal or tax advice.
